Dream Resource Center Grand Opening

An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 50 members of the community helped Oxnard College celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its Dream Resource Center on Wednesday, August 14. The Center will provide comprehensive services to undocumented students, their families and campus allies.

Located in Room 109 in the Associated Student Government Building, the Dream Resource Center is invitingly decorated with flags from around the world and inspiring quotes. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly,” adorns one wall. On another is a whiteboard with quotes and the Center’s purpose: “…to educate, empower and explain how undocumented youth can pursue higher education and create meaningful change.”

“It’s our privilege at Oxnard College to provide support to all of our Dreamers and to students who are here at Oxnard College to realize their dreams, because they are changing their lives and the lives of their families, their community and society as a whole,” said Oxnard College’s President Luis Sanchez during his opening remarks.

Other speakers included Dr. Oscar Cobian, vice president of student development; Ventura County Community College Trustee Gabriela Torres; and Dream Resource Center Student Peer Mentors Luis Mendiola Luna and Mariana Gonzalez Magaña.

We appreciate the support of the many nonprofit organizations, civic leaders and Oxnard College staff and task force members who attended the event. We were also honored to have Ventura County Community College Trustees Bernardo Perez and Torres; Patty Quiroz, Deputy District Director for Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson; and Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios District Director for Assembly member Jacqui Irwin.
