I really loved at Moorpark hearing the animals at the zoo in the morning when I got to campus. And of course, the amazing friends I have made!
Until I went to a VCCCD community college, I never thought I could…survive and pass a 7:30am Calculus 3 class!

What did you love the most about attending community college?
I loved Moorpark College from the first semester I attended. I remember going in the mornings and being able to hear the animals. Going to Moorpark gave me the opportunity to complete my prerequisites while also working through what career I wanted to eventually pursue. It also made it possible for me to work and go to school at the same time, lots of late nights but definitely worth it! Moorpark always had a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.
Until I went to a VCCCD community college, I never thought I could…Get my degree. I originally had just planned to transfer but when my counselor told me I was super close to completing my associates, I decided to go for it! I am one of the few people in my family that has a college education and I plan to go the whole way!

I never thought I could challenge myself and grow even more. The challenges I have faced with classes and dance performances; I learned I can do anything I put my mind to. Some semesters were very hard and stressful, but I ultimately learned I would get through it and be proud of myself.

A trip I took in Chemistry Club made me realize I wanted to do more than just chemistry and that’s when I learned about engineering. After that I researched engineering majors and fell in love with Materials Engineering. The next part was taking the right courses for the degree and with help from counselors and professors I finished my AS degree in Engineering. It took 4 years, but I would not have changed any moment of it.

What did you love the most about attending community college?
Getting to explore different subjects and try new things. Public Speaking taught me how to frame and present an argument, Art History developed my appreciation for the language of creativity, English pushed me to consider an array of perspectives and how I convey my own, History continues to help me understand my place in the world and contextualize every aspect of it. Studying a broad range of subjects may not have initially been my choice, but I savor the way it has transformed how I relate to so many things.

Do math! Oh my goodness, I owe a world of thanks to Professor Detgen for helping me tear down the wall between math and I. I always believed I just wasn’t a “math person,” but now I know that’s simply not true. I am continuing on into the Moorpark Nursing program in order to become a Registered Nurse. I will also be working towards my Bachelors Degree of Nursing while I am attending Moorpark College.
Are you transitioning into the workforce? If yes, what will you be doing?
I still have some schooling to finish, but eventually I hope to be working as a labor and delivery nurse or neonatal nurse.
Who inspired you to pursue your educational goals?
Many people encouraged me along my journey and have been integral parts of my success. My husband, Brent, who took over the majority of my role at home, and 2 daughters inspired me and kept me going. My parents and sister believed in me when I didn’t. Many of my friends, some of whom are nurses, also inspired me to take hold of my future and reach for my dream to become a Registered Nurse!

Attending college gave me so much confidence and showed me that I can do more than I thought I could!! My goals felt so far from my reality, but my amazing professors and wonderful new friends helped me achieve something I never thought I could! I love the community I built at Moorpark!
