College trustees shine light of approval on solar projects

Solar power could be coming later this year to Moorpark College, as well as to Oxnard and Ventura community colleges.

Solar panels installed atop parking structures will provide power for the lighting beneath, and they’ll reduce reliance on the power grid and save money, said a Ventura County Community College District spokesperson.

“The purpose is to create electricity so that costs come down and electricity is utilized on campus to generate savings,” said David El Fattal, assistant chancellor of business and administrative services.

Plans to bring solar power to the three colleges, which collectively enrolled more than 30,800 students in 2017, have been in the works since September 2017, when district officials presented general outlines of the projects to the board of trustees. At Moorpark College, solar arrays would be installed at 57 carports on the campus. The project would require removing 49 light poles and 23 “nonnative, ornamental trees,” according to preliminary plans.
