High School at Moorpark College opens doors to incoming freshmen

The High School at Moorpark College will expand its enrollment in the next two years as it welcomes freshmen in the fall. The following year, 2020-21, sophomores will also be able to apply.

Since its founding in 2000, the alternative high school in the Moorpark Unified School District has made it possible for students to take high school and college courses simultaneously, giving them a head start on accumulating general education credits while earning their high school diploma.

The tuition-free program was open only to high-achieving juniors and seniors, but MUSD officials began discussions three years ago to expand the program to allow younger students.

“We had so many people come to our admissions information night that were searching for an alternative to a traditional high school,” said Ruby Delery, principal of HS@MC. “Many times they were eighth-grade students and parents that were disappointed that they would have to wait until the 11th grade to enroll.”

The plan to open up the program came to fruition last month, when the Ventura County Community College District board of trustees approved of the expansion during its Jan. 22 meeting.
