Beth Thompson, Accounts Payable Supervisor | Employee Highlight Series

VCCCD would like you to get to know the staff and faculty who contribute their time, talent & education to the success of our students. We will regularly highlight employees across all four campuses, sharing their professional expertise, their educational path, and a few fun facts about them.

Name: Elizabeth (Beth) Thompson

Position and what that entails: Accounts Payable Supervisor

For the past five years, I’ve supervised a great team of dedicated technicians who process hundreds of invoices monthly; we do reimbursements for travel and expenses, and I do regulatory reporting such as 1099 forms. We run the checks and have an automated archiving system to manage our files. I train and explain our procedures to staff, and work with vendors when we have account issues.

Additionally, I do P-Card audits, journal entries, and reporting for our team. I train staff on our travel and P-card procedures and am currently a member of the team working on our Automated Travel system that will soon be implemented.

Previously, I did analyst work, managing a very large vendor contract and doing Accounts Payable work for many years in several different industries.

Were you a student at one of the district’s colleges and if so which one? What was your major and your degree?

Yes, I attended Oxnard and Ventura colleges and graduated with an AS in business from Ventura College. I went to California Lutheran University’s ADEP program for my business management degree.

Are you from the area and if not, where are you from?

As a child, I lived in Santa Maria, but I have lived in Oxnard since I was a teenager.

Share something personal about yourself: (ex: pets, hobbies, what are you currently watching/listening to and why you enjoy it)

My husband, Robert, and I have been married 38 years, and have three adult children: two daughters and a son. We have four grandchildren, a 4-year-old girl and three boys, ages 3, 2 and 9 months. I spend a lot of time with my family.

One of my favorite things is to take the grandkids to special events; we are planning a Pumpkin Patch trip, which we do each year with them. I love music and attend concerts often; we recently saw Pink, Carrie Underwood, and Van Morrison.

I’m a Dodger and LA Kings fan, and we attend games each year. We have a Jack Russell terrier named Bella, a Chihuahua named Peanut, and a tuxedo cat named Bitty.

I love crafts, specifically paper-crafts such as cards, 3D items, and scrapbooks. I recently got a Cricut maker, so I’m learning more techniques and I enjoy going to craft classes and retreats. I like to camp, go to festivals, and travel; Las Vegas, Seattle, and Hawaii are my favorite places to go.

Two words to describe yourself:

Resilient and persistent.
