New Student Welcome Events Recap

You could feel the excitement. At the new student welcome events prior to the fall semester’s start, staff, faculty, and administrators at Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges introduced their campuses to first-time college students, who learned about support services available to help them succeed. The campuses were busy with students walking around the campuses to see where their classes are and connecting with friends.

At Moorpark College, Outreach Specialist Alejandra Martinez encouraged students to get integrated into the campus and to get to know the faculty and staff. The purpose of the day, Martinez said, is to explore all the different departments, to learn techniques about how to be a great student, and to take a campus tour. Students were invited to ask questions. “We are really friendly and approachable and that we are here for them–to make their experience at Moorpark the best it can be,” said Martinez.

Oxnard College’s First Year Experience (FYE) mentors, staff, and everyone involved in Discovery Week put students at ease. They gave students some tips to help them during their first days. Remember to study, they said, talk to the school’s mentors, charge your phone and schedule an appointment with the academic counselors.

The New Student Expo at Ventura College welcomed 400 first-year students and 80 of their family members over the two Expo days. The students who participated in the FYE were inspired by the workshops and enjoyed learning about the school’s services. These incoming Pirates have set their course for success.
